This is Suryia and Roscoe, who live at the Tigers' sanctuary in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina .I got this e-mail recently. I like it because we can see what good mates they are. Humans seem amazed by this sort of thing, as though only humans can have cross-species friendships. Of course, all species have good mates and they all have the capacity to have friends from other species. Make it a point to be open to friendships with those who are different from you, for example they might have a different religion or political views, or they might be a rhinoceros.
Life is great when you have an orangutan as a best friend...(I imagine).

haha....that's great. These kinds of stories are always nice. They reveal the bonding nature in other species...as being very similar.
I'm with Mango, 'why not', Lily tries to make friends with everyone she meets and usually succeeds, (she's not keen on adult humans though). Lilly and one of the cats seem to have a particularly strong bond, they often share a soft cosy spot together and he, (Hobbit the cat) often gets away with stealing her bones, I'd say share, but I think it is just because Lilly is such a push over.
Lovely post, if animals have the capacity for interspecies friendship, we have no excuse for not being more accepting and appreciative of others.
In the school library we have a picture book by Anthony Brown, called Little Beauty it is about the friendship between a kitten and a gorilla.
If I was the dog, I would teach it to scratch me behind the ears.
If that just isn't the cutest thing we've ever seen. Are orangutans nice all the time? We just saw a show on Animal Planet about a Chimp that killed one man and pulled the foot off the other!

Jeremy- Well said. We are more similar than many think. We have the same emotions.
Book Pusher- I love cats too but they get scared of me. It's not easy being misunderstood.
Lee- Great idea! I reckon that Orangutan would give great scratches.
Scout and Freyja- I've heard chimps have a violent streak. Some say they most resemble humans, of course many humans and chimps aren't violent. I believe orangutans are more gentle in nature. Anyone else know much about orangutans?
