My Pink Ball

I haven't posted for nearly a week, a record long time. This is because I have been very busy. One activity that has kept me occupied is staring into the middle distance, otherwise known as daydreaming. I have seen humans do this a bit; Tim is fairly good at it. However, most humans are not good at it. I have heard it is because older humans strongly discourage younger humans from doing it. They go to a special place specifically designed to stop them from this very worthwhile pursuit. That place they call "school." The benefits of daydreaming are too many to list here but to get you started; creativity, entertainment, relaxation, improved intelligence and a greater sense of Dog.

Something else that gets my attention is my pink ball. I love tearing after it and catching it on the bounce. It is great to chase it on my own but much more fun with other dogs. My pink ball is the pride of the dog park. This is the ball that all the dogs want above any other. I love the competition of trying to get it before the other dogs. I am faster than all the other dogs in the park (just stating the facts) so I often do. However, the person throwing it usually throws it to the advantage of other dogs to keep it even and interesting. I don't mind if I get the ball or not, I just love running fast and going after the ball. I think competition is about putting in your best effort. This makes competition rewarding. It is when dogs or people put the importance on winning that competition becomes a negative influence. In summary, competition is good; attaching significance on winning is bad. Little humans intuitively know this but once again big humans sometimes come in and mess things up.

Life is great when you have other dogs to chase a ball with.

Big humans are always forgetting what competition should be about, especially when it involves their own kids, which is a bit sad really, cause all it does is make everyone unhappy. Think I have mastered the art of daydreaming but I havn't seen any improvement in intelligence, maybe I should do it more, but then I really would get nothing done. Happy ball chasing.

"Mingling" is under-rated...so is playing for that matter. :)

Ahhh yes, the big humans can be BIG messer uppers huh! :) Hopefully, a few of the kids still hold onto their innate ways though. :)

I like these pictures of you with your pink ball, and I'm glad you got a good long week of daydreaming in.

I like to daydream. I'd like to spend more time daydreaming, but I have this job thing I have to go to five days a week. Although, to be honest, I do daydream sometimes at work. Like today I am daydreaming about quitting. *Sigh*

Hi Ruby Isabella
Life is great when you have other dogs to chase a ball with and that ball happens to be the coveted "pink ball".
Enjoy your dreams.

That's a great ball Ruby Isabella, my favourite is a red rubber ball on a rope (the rope means Muzzle can throw it further too!). I am not so keen on lots of dogs chasing after my ball though.

Muzzle likes daydreaming but I think she is probably part dog anyway.

Wow, Ruby Isabella. Sometimes your words get right to the core of things I remember when I was a kid. My teachers always used to tell my parents on parents' night that I daydreamed too much. I thought that meant there was something wrong with me. Thanks for letting me know it was okay. Sometimes, I see that far-away look in my students' faces, and you reminded me, if I have to interrupt their dream, how important it is to do it in a gentle way. That stuff you said about competition was really apt as well. Life is good when dogs help us remember how to live happier.

Hi Ruby,

I want your pink ball too!! My human's favourite colour is pink - she is always trying to dress me up in pink things but I don't think it's really my colour...

You're so right about the competing and winning thing. Lots of people with dogs that do competitions (like Obedience) seem to forget that - they get so hung up on the ribbons and forget that it's really about spending time with your dog. Some even get a dog just so they can win, not because they really like that kind of dog!! (Lots of people told Hsin-Yi to get another kind of dog coz they said a Dane would be too slow and stupid and never win anything...)

Don't wait too long to post again - we missed you!

Slobbers,

Oh, school tried awfully hard to stop me from daydreaming...not to mention to force a competitive attitude on me...all the way up to the PhD level...but it failed....
